Forty-five percent of all inhabited islands
in the atolls suffered disruptions to electricity
services following the tsunami that hit the
Maldives last Sunday, said the Ministry of
Atolls Administration.
The Ministry informed the media yesterday
that from the islands that had suffered
tsunami-related blackouts, they have now
fixed the situation in 10 percent of the
islands. The Ministry said that they were
now sending teams to the atolls in a coordinated
effort with concerned authorities to fix
the electricity related problems in the
islands.

dirupted and destroyed. |
Atolls Ministry has now announced
seeking 40 generators to replace the
generators in the islands that were damaged
due to
the flooding. The Ministry said that
they would be distributing these generators
to the islands that have suffered the
worst
in terms of the power service. There has been mounting criticism of the
Maldivian government in the last few days
about the slow response to the disaster,
political advantage being taken by pro-government
election candidates in the distribution of
aid and claims that the government is trying
to sweep under the carpet the true extent
of the devastation in the Maldives.
